The Mississippi Gaming Commission explains that wagering generally involves payment, chance and an opportunity to receive something of value. It identifies authorized gaming activities and warns that poker outside an applicable statutory exemption can be illegal.
A private venue or absence of rake does not establish an exemption. Check the payment, prizes, venue, host benefit and participant ages, and identify the actual authorization covering the proposed game.
