Your first live poker game

Prepare for your first in-person poker game: confirm a place, understand the format and cost, and ask the host about table procedures.

Your first live poker game is easier to approach when you know what to expect. Confirm the details with the organiser, learn the basics of the game being played and leave time to ask questions before you take a seat.

Before the day

  • Confirm your place. Ask the host whether the session is going ahead and whether they have accepted your request to join.
  • Check the schedule. Confirm the address, arrival time, start time and expected duration.
  • Understand the cost. Ask about the buy-in, blinds, entry fees, rebuys and payment arrangements. Decide in advance how much you will spend.
  • Confirm what to bring. Ask about any registration or venue entry requirements and whether you need to bring anything for the game.
  • Explain your experience. Tell the host you are new to live poker and ask whether the session suits beginners.

Know the game you are joining

Check the poker variant rather than assuming every listing is Texas Hold’em. If it is Hold’em, read how a hand works and review the hand rankings before attending.

Ask whether the session is a cash game or tournament and how buying chips, changing tables and leaving the session work. If the listing mentions a league, ask about membership and the session’s place in the league schedule.

When you arrive

Find the organiser and introduce yourself. Confirm the chip values, seating arrangement and house rules before you start. Ask who deals, who handles questions and how breaks work. If you are unsure about anything, this is a useful time to ask.

At a home game, check directly with the host before bringing another person. At a pub or club, ask where registration takes place and who you should speak to when you arrive.

Ask about table procedures

Live play includes handling physical cards and chips. Ask the host or dealer how they want players to announce actions, place bets and show cards. Follow the table’s instructions and ask whose turn it is when you are unsure.

You can ask a procedural question without asking another player how to play your hand. If you do not understand the amount of a bet or the action facing you, ask the dealer or organiser to explain before you act.

Plan for the next visit

Before leaving, ask how to confirm a place for another session. Keep the host’s agreed contact method and check the date again before returning. A recurring schedule in a listing may change.
