New Jersey distinguishes a player from someone who advances or profits from gambling. Its player definition includes equal-term social games and certain unpaid arrangements such as inviting players and providing premises or equipment, when the statutory conditions are met.
Check the host's role and benefits, venue, participation terms, stakes and ages against the current definitions and offenses. The definition is not blanket approval for every home game.
See enacted P.L. 2025, c.128, section 26, which amends N.J.S.A. 2C:37-1, and review the applicable Chapter 37 provisions. Older proposed bills do not establish current law.
