New York distinguishes a player from someone who advances or profits from gambling. Section 225.00 includes equal-term social games in its player definition and certain unpaid arrangements such as inviting players or providing premises and supplies, subject to its conditions.

Section 225.05 addresses knowingly advancing or profiting from unlawful gambling. The host's actual role and any compensation matter.

Check the venue, equal terms, rake or other host benefit, stakes and ages against section 225.00 and section 225.05. A social label alone does not establish compliance.
