To assess a home poker game in Maine, start with Maine Criminal Code, Chapter 39. Review Title 17-A, sections 951–958. Read the player, unlawful-gambling and organizer provisions together.

Before hosting or joining, confirm:

  • Are participants ordinary players, and does anyone advance or profit from gambling as the code defines those terms?
  • Do the rules cover this private residence, club, business or public event?
  • How do rake, seat fees, required purchases, donations or other organizer benefits affect the game?
  • What limits or conditions apply to wagers, player winnings, entry fees and prizes?
  • What age and other participation requirements apply?

Use the official source to identify the applicable conditions and effective amendments. A private venue or game without rake is only part of the assessment.
