Iowa provides for social gambling by individuals under section 99B.45, including poker when the applicable conditions are met.

Section 99B.42 requires, among other things, a genuine social relationship beyond the gambling activity, fair play, restrictions on charges and organizer benefit, and a limit of $200 that each participant may win or lose over 24 consecutive hours. Section 99B.45 also excludes school property and imposes additional conditions.

These are only some of the requirements. Read Iowa Code section 99B.45 and section 99B.42 before hosting. Check public invitations, fees, the venue, ages and participants' relationship against all applicable provisions.

General information only. Check the current law and obtain local advice about your particular arrangements.
